The May 2026 Core Update Has Finished
Google’s May 2026 core update has finished rolling out. It started on 21 May and completed on 2 June, taking around 12 days, which matched the March update almost exactly.
It was a volatile one. Tracking tools picked up clear spikes in ranking movement on 23 May, 30 May and again just before the rollout finished, which suggests Google pushed changes out in several waves rather than one steady release.
Two Core Updates in Ten Weeks
This is the second core update in quick succession, following the March update that completed on 8 April. For many sites that means two rounds of reassessment within a single quarter, and less time to recover or consolidate gains between them.
Early analysis pointed to shifts in which types of platform were favoured, with discussion-led sources gaining visibility in some results while certain video results lost ground. As always with core updates, the effect varies widely by industry and query type.
What You Should Do Now
Now the rollout is complete, your data is readable. Compare the fortnight before 21 May with the period after 2 June at page level, and look for patterns in which templates or content types moved.
Remember that AI Overviews and AI Mode are also reducing the clicks Google sends to websites. That makes the positions you do hold more valuable than ever, and ranking at the very top more important than it used to be.
Focus on the fundamentals: content that serves the reader, strong expertise signals and a technically sound site. There was no new guidance specific to this update. If you need help diagnosing movement, our SEO and technical SEO teams can dig into the data.
