A Far Bigger Update Than December
The first ranking data from the March 2026 core update is in, and it confirms what many site owners felt during the rollout: this was a significantly more disruptive update than the December 2025 core update.
According to SE Ranking data shared with Search Engine Land, nearly 80% of top-three results shifted during the update. Almost one in four pages that ranked in the top 10 dropped out of the top 100 entirely, compared with roughly one in seven after the December update.
Who Won and Who Lost
The clearest pattern is a move away from intermediaries. Aggregator and directory-style sites, which collect and repackage information from elsewhere, lost ground. Brands, official sites and sources with their own data gained it.
In practice, that means Google is increasingly rewarding the original source of information rather than the page that summarises it. If a searcher can go straight to the company, the manufacturer or the organisation that owns the data, Google is more inclined to send them there.
What This Means for Your Site
If your content largely restates information available elsewhere, this update is a warning sign. The fix is not cosmetic. It means adding something only you can offer: first-hand experience, proprietary data, original research, genuine expert commentary or real customer outcomes.
If you run a service business, lean into what makes you the source. Case studies, real pricing guidance, local knowledge and named experts all signal that your page is a destination rather than a middleman.
And if you were hit, resist the urge to make sweeping changes overnight. Identify the specific pages that fell, compare them with the pages that replaced them, and close the gap in value page by page. Our SEO specialists can help you pinpoint exactly where that gap is.
