Google Launches the August 2026 Spam Update
Google has started rolling out the August 2026 spam update. It began on August 18 at 9:27 AM Pacific Time and applies globally across all languages and regions. Google expects the rollout to take a few days.
This is the third spam update of the year, following the March and June 2026 spam updates. On LinkedIn, Google Search Central described it as a normal spam update that will roll out for all languages and locations.
What We Know So Far
As with the June update, Google has not published a companion blog post or announced any new spam policy categories. That points to a routine enforcement cycle rather than a change in the rules.
What has changed since last year is the scope of those rules. In May, Google extended its spam policies to explicitly cover attempts to manipulate its generative AI features. Tactics designed to game AI Overviews and AI Mode are therefore enforceable under this update just like traditional ranking manipulation.
What You Should Do
Watch your Search Console data over the coming days, but hold off on drawing conclusions until the rollout completes. Early movement during a spam update is often noisy.
If you see a sharp drop, check your site against Google’s spam policies, with particular attention to thin, duplicated, or mass-produced pages, and to any AI visibility tactics that rely on artificial mentions or machine-first content.
