The August 2026 Spam Update Has Finished
Google has confirmed the August 2026 spam update is complete. It ran from August 18 to August 21, a total of 2 days and 16 hours, and applied globally across all languages.
That makes it the longest of the three spam updates Google has shipped in 2026, though still very short compared with some past spam updates that ran for weeks.
No New Policies, No Link Spam Focus
Google did not publish a companion blog post or introduce any new spam policies with this update. A Google spokesperson also confirmed it did not specifically target link spam or the site reputation abuse policy.
In short, if your site was not breaking Google’s spam policies before this update, there is no new standard to worry about. The rules are the same; the systems enforcing them have simply been refreshed.
What You Should Do Now
With the rollout closed, Search Console data from after August 21 gives you a far cleaner read than anything pulled while the update was still moving. Use the weeks before August 18 as your baseline.
If you have lost visibility, work through Google’s spam policies honestly and look for anything that could be classed as thin, scaled, or manipulative content. Be patient with recovery. Google’s documentation is clear that it can take months, because its automated systems need time to observe that a site now follows the rules.
If you were not affected, there is nothing to change. Keep producing content for people rather than for algorithms. For a closer look at how hard this update hit, see our analysis of the ranking data, or talk to our SEO team.
